Sven Butenschön - Head Coach, 2013/15

<p>Sven Butensch&ouml;n has been the Head Coach of the University of British Columbia Men's Program for 9 years. He has an extensive playing background prior to his coaching career that includes: WHL, AHL, NHL, DEL , World Championships &amp; '2010' Olympics for Germany. He has been a well known name in the hockey world around Greater Vancouver for many years and our program is thrilled to be able to have a coach of his caliber within our ranks.</p>

Graham Thomas - Program Director - Skills Coach

<p>As well as his duties as Program Director, Graham is the Head Coach for our 2012 program &amp; our 2015 team with Shaun Lymer. Graham has been the Head Coach of the University of British Columbia's Women's Program for over a decade. He has experience in the NCAA coaching with University of Syracuse, as well as boys &amp; girls youth hockey all over the lower mainland for many years. In 2023 he began the Bulldogs Program within the 'HPL' that started as a one team project and has quickly grown into six age groups as well as launched a new female program in 2024 with the 'FSL' named the Vancouver Aeros.</p>

Shaun Lymer - Skills Coach

<p>Shaun joined the program in a full time capacity in 2024 in an operations role for the Bulldogs &amp; Aeros as well as his Head Coach duties for the 2014 team &amp; coaching duties for the 2015's with Graham Thomas and being one of the Lead Skill Development Coaches for all ages in the program. He has been a development coach for 8 years in the Greater Vancouver area working with youth athletes from minor hockey to WHL &amp; NCAA. As well as help organize and run hockey schools around BC, Minnesota &amp; Hungary.</p>

Paul Whintors - Head Coach, 2017

<p>Paul has been a hockey coach for over 25 years, in many capacities and at many different levels. Prior to his coaching career Paul was fortunate enough to have played NCAA, Div.I hockey at Cornell University. He now is the Owner &amp; Operator of 'Complex Hockey Training' that is based in Langley, BC.</p>

Nate Fleming - Skills Coach

<p>Nate played his Jr. A hockey for the Spruce Grove Saints, where he was named AJHL All-Star, Most Dedicated Player, and won an AJHL Championship. He then moved on to University hockey playing for UBC Mens Varsity Program, he finished his career playing overseas in the EIHL.</p>

Ryan Campbell - Assistant Coach, 2013/15 - Skills Coach

<p>Ryan has been a Skill Development coach in the Lower Mainland for years &amp; joined us in our first season in 2023-2024 to work with the 2013 age group where he continues to support us today. He also assists in skills sessions for our 2012-2015 age groups. Outside of his duties with us Ryan is also one of the Owners of Two Way Hockey.</p>

Cavin Tilsley - Head Coach 2014, Assistant Coach 2019

<p>Cavin is currently in his first year working with the Bulldogs, he has been a great addition to our coaching group. Prior to joining us, Cavin worked in youth hockey for Vancouver Minor &amp; played his Jr. hockey in the BCHL for the Prince George Spruce Kings &amp; West Kelowna Warriors where he ended his career as the team Captain and one numerous awards.</p>

Keilan Toews - Assistant Coach, 2016's and 2017's

<p>Keilan is currently in his first full winter season with us after working last spring with Paul &amp; our 2017 group. He has been a senior skills provider at Complex Hockey for over five years. We cant say enough good things about KT and how he is with the kids in the program.</p>

Mitch Fyffe - Skills Coach

<p>Mitch is known as one of the top Skills coaches in the Greater Vancouver area. He is part owner of Hockey House, which has worked with youth hockey players to BCHL, WHL, NCAA, Professional &amp; NHL. He has held many coaching positions with Academies such as BWC &amp; St.Georges. He is currently a Head Coach in the JPHL as well as the Skills Coach for Surrey Eagles in the BCHL.</p>

Partap Sandhu - Skills Coach

<p>Partap is the current Assistant Coach for the UBC Women's Hockey program where he is in his second year. He has run Taps Hockey for over 15 years with a focus on skill development for youth players to professionals. Partap is known as a high end skating coach who has spent many summers working with high caliber Jr. &amp; College athletes alike to perfect their skating.</p>

Josh Thrower - 2018's

<p>Josh Thrower is a seasoned hockey player and dedicated coach with over a decade of experience in the sport. Hailing from a small town with a rich hockey tradition, Josh&rsquo;s passion for the game ignited at an early age. He played in over 300 games in the WHL, and over 300 games at the professional level. Showcasing his skills as a top player and gaining recognition for his strong work ethic and leadership on and off the ice. He has played for some notable major tournaments,&nbsp; Brick team, Quebec International, Team BC, and Team Canada at multiple international events. Josh was drfated by the Vancouver Canucks in the 5th 140th overall.&nbsp;</p> <p>After a successful playing career, Josh transitioned to coaching, where he has made a significant impact on young athletes. His coaching philosophy emphasizes skill development, teamwork, and a deep understanding of the game. Josh has served as a head coach for various youth teams, leading them to multiple championships and fostering a love for hockey in his players.</p> <p>Josh is committed to creating a positive and inclusive environment for all players, helping them reach their full potential both on and off the ice. He believes in empowering athletes through personalized coaching techniques and a focus on individual growth.</p> <p>Whether on the ice as a player or guiding the next generation as a coach, Josh Thrower embodies the spirit of hockey, inspiring players to strive for excellence and enjoy the game.</p>

Jim Strang - Skills Coach

<p>Jim Strang is a dedicated hockey coach with a passion for player development, team culture, and helping athletes reach their full potential both on and off the ice. With over 30 years of coaches experience in competitive hockey, Jim is known for his strong leadership, attention to detail, and ability to build confident, hardworking teams.</p> <p>His coaching philosophy focuses on skill development, accountability, teamwork, and creating an environment where players can grow their love for the game while competing at a high level. Jim emphasizes respect, work ethic, and character alongside hockey IQ and performance.</p> <p>Throughout his coaching career, Jim has worked with athletes across multiple age groups and levels, earning the respect of players, parents, and fellow coaches for his commitment to development and positive mentorship. He takes pride in fostering a competitive but supportive atmosphere that encourages players to improve every day.</p> <p>Whether leading practices, developing systems, or mentoring young athletes, Jim brings energy, experience, and a player-first approach to the game.</p>

Conner McDonald

<p>Conner played in over 300 WHL games and was one of the Top Defenseman in his age group. He was a leader and played a huge role in UBC turning around the program to one of the best in Canada. He helped guide them to their first Championship and mulitple National appearances. Conner had many pro opportunities including the AHL, but had to hang up the skates due to injuries.&nbsp;</p> <p>Conner is a very passionate coach who has been leading and developing players for many years while still playing at UBC. He is going into his 2nd year coaching with the Bulldogs.</p>
